Conservation of Magnus’s Commercial Atlas of the World, New York, 1856. Condition: This atlas is a 19 inch tall folio in half leather with cloth sides. The spine was dangling, the front board was loose and the lower joint was cracked. The sewing on sawn-in cords was stable overall. The paper was stable yet acidic and brittle. The project involved rebinding using the existing spine, boards, flyleaves and sewing. |

Treatment: The original leather was chemically consolidated using 2% Klucel G in isopropyl alcohol. The soiled leaves were surface cleaned. The spine was removed mechanically. The board leather and pastedowns were lifted along the spine edge. The spine linings and adhesive were removed with a poultice of methyl cellulose. The spine and shoulders were lined with heavyweight kozo paper using wheat starch paste. There are new inner hinges of colored paper over airplane cotton. The shoulders were whipstitched with 18/3 linen thread. The spine was lined with an extended lining of airplane cotton that was adhered beneath the lifted board leather using Jade 403 PVA. The linen hinges were adhered beneath the lifted pastedowns. There is a 1-on-2-off hollow tube constructed with Archival Endleaf paper. The joints and hinges were lined with heavyweight kozo paper colored with acrylic pigments. The original spine was re-adhered using Jade 403 PVA. This volume was conserved in 2021. |
