This copy of Sebastian Brant’s Narrenschiff (Ship of Fools) was printed in Paris in 1498.

It was rebound in the 19th century and damaged by water in 2016.

The volume was disbound and the leaves were vacuumed under low suction before surface cleaning.

The leaves were washed in a series of baths in alcohol and deionized water, followed by air-drying.

The sections were mended and resewn on raised cords.

There are new back bead endbands sewn over cord.

New boards were fabricated from layers of acid-free board.

Extended hinges of vellum were adhered to the spine and the inside of the boards.

The boards were laced on and the volume was covered in alum tawed goatskin to achieve an appearance contemporary with the date of printing.
