The Conservation of Holy Bible, Boston, c. 1876.

One of the most common challenges for a book conservator is the repair of a large 19th century Family Bible. This volume is five inches thick and weighs almost twenty pounds. It had many loose leaves, and detached boards and flyleaves.

The degraded leather was chemically consolidated. The leaves were mended with kozo paper using wheat starch paste. The loose sections were sewn back onto the existing textblock with linen thread.

The boards were re-attached with several hinges made from undyed cotton. The hinges were covered with kozo paper and colored with acrylic pigments. The original spine was readhered.
